Wall Lettuce is a 2-4’ tall, multi branched plant in the chicory tribe (Cichorieae) of the family Asteraceae. Members of this tribe have flowers composed of either ray florets or disk florets, but never both. Wall Lettuce has always been easy for me to identify because it has only 5 petals on its ray flower, unlike any similar species.
The leaves are edible, and can be used in salads, although “Plants for a Future” only gives it an edibility rating of 2 out of 5.
This annual plant is a native of Europe, but has become naturalized in disturbed ground in the less arid parts of our region

Habitat- Disturbed ground
Range- Mostly west of the Cascades. Scattered locations on the east slopes of the Cascades in Washington, and in ne Washington/nw Idaho
Blooms- All summer
